The MVLGA Team Championships were scheduled for 5th – 7th October 2020 at Thorpness Golf Club. This year has proved very challenging for everyone, with COVID 19 overtaking our lives and halting all normality. We are now living in very different times and were all grateful when we could all start playing golf again, so plans were laid to try and make our team championships happen. This proved a test and, out of 20 teams originally entered, we were able to put the tournament on with 13 teams, all excited about making the trip to the coast. I had been over for a meeting during August and everything was beginning to take shape. I had also met with Scott Allison to begin the process of inputting all the information onto Golf Box. This would enable us to score on line, and access all the results and pretty much make us all Covid safe. I am pleased to say everyone took this on board and with only a few glitches all ran smoothly.

Day 1
After a lot of rain on Sunday and a very wet course, we were assured by Becky Brewerton, ex LET Tour, that within an hour the greens would have drained. She wasn’t wrong and we enjoyed a relatively dry day. The greensome competition gives players an opportunity to see the course and work out their strategies for the forthcoming days in a fun environment.

Day 2
Tuesday turned out to be a lovely day with a light breeze. New MV Lesley Fox from Worcestershire led from Jenny Deeley of Staffordshire in the scratch event and Ruth Robertson Lincolnshire led the net event. In the team event Staffordshire, the defending champions, led from Worcestershire by 3 shots. The course is a coastal heathland course with some interesting holes and true greens. There were many good comments about the course and players enjoyed the experience.
We would normally have looked forward to the player’s dinner, in the evening, in the country club. This of course was impossible due to the new ‘rule of 6’ and other restrictions. We all retreated to our accommodations to enjoy a pleasant evening with friends. It was great to have our President, Sue Timberlake, starting us all day. Day 3
We woke up to glorious sunshine and we all looked forward to some good scores. The greens were much quicker and a light breeze helped the course dry out and gave us a new challenge. Pins had been changed overnight and were in some challenging positions and again some good scores were posted. Vouchers were given to the winners.
Thanks go to Thorpeness Golf Club and especially Christine Langford and all their staff for making us all feel welcome and providing us with a great venue to host our Team Championship.
