Yet again the Midland Vets supported the Portugese seniors in their numbers. The competition took place in Vilamoura from 1st to 3rd February and was played on both the Victoria and the Old Course, 2 of the finest courses on the Algarve. The weather was for the most part sunny and warm, with fast greens and generally good conditions. Sue Spencer of Staffordshire led Division 1 by 1 shot going into Day 2. She was in a strong field of senior internationals and hot on her heals were Sheena Mclroy of Ireland and Minna Kaarnalahti from Finland. Both are experienced seniors. Sue played some steady golf throughout the round, striking the ball well. Sheena closed her round with 3 birdies on the back 9 leaving Sue 2 shots back and she finished in a very creditable 3rd place. Sheena beat Minna in the playoff. I'm sure Sue's time will come and she will take a senior title before long.
